Oliver Mbekeka became the first female to manage in the Uganda Premier league during Lugazi FC’s narrow win over Express FC under the floodlights of Nakivubo on Tuesday.
Since its inception in 1968, no woman coach had ever managed in the men’s topflight division.
Mbekeka who was appointed at Lugazi FC on interim basis replaced Sadick Sempigi.
The former Crested Cranes player led the side to its maiden topflight division on the historic day at Nakivubo.
Before Tuesday’s victory, Lugazi had lost three and drew twice in their previous five games.
Sam Ssemugugu scored the all important goal for Lugazi in the 25th minute heading home a perfect Freedom Mungudit cross.
Lugazi was able to hold on for their first ever topflight division victory.
This was Express FC’s first defeat at home this term after victories against Mbale Heroes and NEC FC as well as a stalemate with Maroons FC.
Lugazi now moves from the base to 13th position with five points while the Red Eagles are 5th on eight points.
