Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Hassan Wasswa Mawanda will conduct the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Draw slated for Wednesday, 15th January in Kenya.
Wasswa who made 75 appearances from the Uganda Cranes during his 13 year international career will conduct the draw alongside Kenya’s McDonald Mariga and Mrisho Ngasa of Tanzania.
The former KCCA FC, SC Villa and Vipers SC midfielder featured at the 2017 and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Gabon and Egypt respectively. At the 2019 AFCON, he was the Uganda Cranes vice captain behind skipper Denis Onyango.
Tanzania’s Ngasa was one of the finest players to come out of the East African nation and is the second most capped Tanzanian player of all time and the nation’s leading scorer with 25 goals.
With a career dating back to 2005, his highlights include playing for three of the biggest clubs in Tanzania, Simba AC , Young Africans and Azam FC.
Beyond Tanzanian borders, the former striker plied his trade with Free State Stars in South Africa before moving to Oman.
Mariga the oldest brother to Kenya’s Victor Wanyama enjoyed a glittering career that included a UEFA Champions League title with Inter Milan, as well as the Serie A trophy and two Coppa Italia wins. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2010.
The former defensive midfielder was the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League, and also represented clubs in Sweden and Spain. He won 40 caps for the Kenya national team, scoring five goals.
The 2024 CHAN Tournament will be held in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from February 1st to 28th of the same month. Senegal are the reigning champions of the competition that features only players from domestic leagues.
