Uganda’s late Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei will be honored with a Memorial Run in Bukwo District on November, 22nd 2025.
The run will bring together athletes, family member and the community to honour the fallen athlete who died in September last year.
The Memorial Run is organized by Ugandan Marathoner Immaculate Chemutai.
“The run will bring together all categories of athletes, elite runners, upcoming seniors, juniors and even primary and secondary school children.
We expect about 600 athletes to participate along with the wider community. Since it’s Rebecca’s memorial, we will also use this platform to sensitize the community about Gender-Based Violence.” Said Chemutai
The Ugandan marathon runner died in 2024 after she was doused in petrol and set on fire by her former boyfriend Dickson Ndiema Marangach in Kenya.
Cheptegei competed at the Paris Games , making her Olympic debut and finishing in 44th place.
She also represented Uganda at IAAF World Cross Country Championship, World Mountain and Trail Running Championship and World Athletics Championships.
