Peruth Chemutai to lead young charges as Uganda Athletics names team for Commonwealth Games

Uganda Athletics has named the team that will represent Uganda at the 2026 Commonwealth Games due in Glasgow, Scotland.
The team has 17-athletes alongside four officials who will oversee the team during the Games scheduled for July 23 to August 1.
2020 Olympic champion over the 3000m women’s steeplechase race Peruth Chemutai headlines the named team to surge for glory in Glasgow. Chemutai scooped bronze at the 2022 games held in Birmingham.
As earlier stated by this website, Uganda’s golden duo of Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo are not part of Uganda’s long list to this year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Cheptegei and Kiplimo announced their transition from track and field to the marathons in 2024 and 2025 respectively which is the main reason why they are not part of the list.
Kiplimo won the 10000m and 5000m races at the previous games while Cheptegei smiled to the same achievement in 2018.
The onus to deliver gold medals is now on Herbert Chebet, Kenneth Kiprop and Dan Chibet among others while Chemutai will be aiming to turn her bronze into gold this time.
2019 World Champion Halima Nakaayi over the 800m race is the over experienced athlete part of the team to Glasgow.
At the 2022 edition that was held in Birmingham, Uganda collected five medals with four coming from Athletics.
Victor Kiplangat became the first ever Ugandan to a win a commonwealth marathon, while Jacob Kiplimo surged to a double gold over the (10,000m and 5000m). Peruth Chemuta managed bronze in the 3000m steeplechase.
The other medal was collected by Uganda’s first ever female Commonwealth games boxer Teddy Nakimuli, who claimed bronze at the previous games.
Uganda will compete in 10 disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games due next month in Glasgow. The delegation will include athletes in athletics, netball, boxing, 3×3 basketball, swimming, weightlifting, para powerlifting, para swimming, judo and track cycling.
Athletics will have the biggest representation with 17 athletes, followed by netball with 12 and boxing with six. Uganda will also field four athletes in 3×3 basketball, four swimmers, three weightlifters, three para powerlifters, two para swimmers, two judokas and one track cyclist.
