Alton Basketball Reaffirms Commitment to Developing Elite Athletes and Future Leaders

Alton Basketball has reaffirmed its commitment to developing skilled basketball players and responsible, purpose-driven young people through a holistic programme that combines high-level basketball training, mentorship, life skills, and community engagement.
The commitment was highlighted during the Alton Basketball Dinner, which brought together athletes, parents, partners, sponsors, and supporters to celebrate the programme’s journey and its vision for the future.
“Our purpose is to raise skilled basketball players and effective citizens. We want our athletes to be able to compete at the highest level, but also to develop the character, discipline, and life skills they need to succeed beyond basketball,” said Alton.
Alton Basketball provides athletes with high-level technical and tactical development to position them for local, continental, and international competition. By incorporating speed and agility training, physical and mental understanding of the game, decision-making, and film analysis, athletes continuously evaluate and improve their performance. The success of this high standard of training is evident on and off the court: more than 30 Alton athletes have represented Uganda and the continent at elite levels of competition, with many securing national team selections alongside high school and university scholarships.
Beyond elite sports development, Alton Basketball places a strong emphasis on inclusion by working with children with special needs, creating an environment where every child feels valued and inspired to discover their potential. This commitment extends into the heart of local communities through the academy’s annual Christmas outreach efforts, which have spanned five consecutive years. Over this period, Alton Basketball has set up a water source in Naguru, organized a community health camp in Kasenyi, established a basketball program in Masoli, built a classroom block in Kawempe, and distributed hampers to families in need.
These outreach initiatives reflect the academy’s belief that sport serves as a powerful engine for social mobility and positive change. A clear story of transformation is that of Prossy Owomugisha from the Luzira slums, who was taken on and trained by the academy before earning a scholarship at Seroma Christian School.
The dinner also recognised the critical role played by parents, partners, and supporters in opening doors for young talent. Key guests in attendance included Diana Atim of EjazzRotary Club; Sheila Birungi Jr, Administrator at MovitFoundation; Sheila Birungi Sr, Vice Chairperson of MovitFoundation; Dr Miriam Mutero-Musinga, General Manager at C-Care IHK; and Brenda Mugasha, Chief Operations Officer at Saracen. Their presence underscored the power of collaborative partnerships in building sustainable pathways for youth development.
“Behind every athlete is a network of people who believe in them. Our parents, partners, sponsors, and supporters have played an important role in helping us build this programme. We are grateful for their belief and continued investment in our athletes,” Alton said.
The evening also provided an opportunity to celebrate athletes Kenzo, Arthur, and Dale, who are preparing to head abroad to pursue the next chapter of their basketball journeys. Alton commended the trio for their dedication and encouraged them to champion the academy’s core values abroad. Looking forward, Alton Basketball remains focused on building a strong pipeline of international-caliber athletes who serve as inspiring leaders within their communities.
“We want our athletes to look back one day and say that Alton did more than teach them how to play basketball; it helped shape who they became,” Alton concluded.
