Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje has been appointed as the head coach of University football league champions Muteesa I Royal University.
Muteesa I Royal University triumphed to the UFL title last season after edging YMCA 1-0 in the final played at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo in May.
Mawejje was confirmed as the new head coach of the Royal Lions at the University premises in Kilumba, Masaka.
“Welcome Tonny Mawejje as our new head coach. A true legend of the game, bringing a wealth of experience, passion, and tactical brilliance to lead the squad into this exciting new chapter,” reads part of the statement from the University.
The former Cranes midfielder will replace George William Ssengabi, who guided the Masaka based institution to their maiden University Football League title.
Since his retirement in 2022, Mawejje has already worked at several clubs, including Wakiso Giants, Kampala Queens and St. Noa Girls.
He will work with former Maroons, SC Villa and Masaka LC goalkeeper Ashadu Bugembe as the goalkeeping coach at Muteesa I Royal University.
