Vipers SC clinched a narrow 1-0 win over UPDF FC under the floodlights of St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Tuesday.
The Venoms needed Gusto Mulongo’s 70th minute goal to overcome the army side managed by their former assistant coach Paul Kiwanuka.
The win saw the Vipers move eight points above second placed NEC FC who play Mbarara City on Wednesday in Kakyeka Stadium.
Mulongo came on as a second substitute replacing Yunus Sentamu in the 63rd minute.
The forward poked home the all important goal after Allan Okello had forced Richard Anyama into a decent save from a free kick.
Vipers could have been ahead before Mulongo’s goal with Sentamu, Karisa and Allan Okello all culprits for missing golden opportunities.
Vipers are now on 62 points with four games to the end of the season and need at least three more wins to secure a seventh league title.
They will now turn focus to the Stanbic Uganda Cup Semifinal first leg with Kitara FC due on Saturday at Kitende.
