FUBA is desperately in need of UGX 360M to cater for the Silverbacks team expenses in Kigali.

The Uganda men’s national basketball team is also set to be disqualified from the ongoing 2021 Afrobasket tournament in Kigali, Rwanda unless they clear their bills.

Uganda finished third in group D of the competition and will face Nigeria in the quarterfinal qualifier game on Tuesday.

Federation of Uganda Basketball Association President Nasser Sserunjogi has written a letter to the Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni and explained that the team’s current situation in Rwanda.

Sserunjogi also called upon the Ugandan government to come out and bail them out.

“Currently our National team is accommodated in Kigali on Credit as we promised FIBA and the host that money will come.

“FIBA and the host gave us until Sunday the 29th to clear all our
outstanding dues or else we are kicked out of the tournament. We have run out of excuses and we are afraid of being embarrassed.”

“We have tried as much as possible to keep this away from the team such that they can focus on playing the game, however we have run out of time. We are afraid that if this happens, we shall be greatly embarrassed as a nation.

“This is to therefore kindly request for the government of Uganda to bail us out.”

For starters, on August 16th the government through National council of Sports gave FUBA UGX 340M for the Afrobasket finals but they had not yet settled the debt for the Morocco trip. So the FUBA management decided to pay the debt to the money lender and they had to acquire tickets for the entire team to Kigali on credit due to their Federation’s good reputation.
