CECAFA postpones Challenge cup kick off dates

The Council for East and Central Africa Football (CECAFA) has postponed the U23 Championship due to the horrendous Covid-19 situation.

The tournament was scheduled for 3rd July but will now kick off on July 17th, 2021 in Ethiopia.

CECAFA confirmed the development in a zoom meeting attended by seven general secretaries from the member associations

“South Sudan for example have their technical bench and some of their players currently quarantined in Doha,Qatar after attending the Arab FIFA Cup and will only travel on the 7th of July.

The League in Tanzania is also still ongoing and will be completed on 18th July 2021 with some players only being available to travel after it is complete.” Read a CECAFA statement.

Last year the tournament was not stages due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in the region. Uganda are the current holders after their 3-0 triumph over Eritrea in 2019 in Kampala.

Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Sudan, Eritrea, South Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, DR Congo and Kenya have all confirmed participation in this year’s edition.
