Cheptegei breaks Bekele’s 16 year old 5000m world record

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei broke a 16 year old word record in the 5000m during the 2020 Monaco Diamond league on Friday.

The Ugandan clocked 12:35.36 to break Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele’s World record from 2004.

He took 1.99 seconds off Bekele’s previous record.

Cheptegei’s personal best time on the track was 12:57.41 but the Ugandan legend who needed 80 hours to travel for the event was determined to make history.

For starters, last year in Valencia on December 1st, Cheptegei set a new 10km World record on the roads with 26:32.

Just six weeks later, the Ugandan legend ran a solo 12:51 to break the road 5km World record
