Denis Onyango earns new role at Uganda Cranes

David GOMBE

Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Masinde Onyango has landed the Nile Special Uganda Cranes ambassador role, Swift Sports Uganda understands.

On Thursday, the former Cranes goalkeeper sent a teaser to national team followers after making a post that pointed to a potential Cranes return.

This website can reliably confirm that Onyango’s new role will be the Nile Special Uganda Cranes ambassador.

The details of Onyango’s new responsibilities will be confirmed on Friday morning at the FUFA House in Mengo.

Onyango announced his retirement in April last year following Uganda’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2021.

Charles Lukwago, Robert Odongkara, Ismail Watenga and Salim Jamal Magoola have battled to fit in his boots.

By the time of his retirement, Onyango had 79 caps after making his debut in 2005.

He led the Cranes to qualification for two AFCON tournaments in 2017 and 2019.

Onyango won the African player of the year award in 2016 and also won the CAF champions league with South African side Mamelodi Sundowns.
