Ecuador convincingly beat hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup in Al khor thanks to captain Enner Valencia.
The former West Ham striker scored twice in the first half to ensure a comfortable win for the Ecuadorians.
Valencia’s brace came after his 4th minute goal was cancelled by a VAR decision ruling offside in the build up.
He responded with a penalty in the 16th minute after a foul by goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb.
He scored the second one a minute past the half hour mark with a header from an Angelo Preciado delivery.
Qatar become the first host nation to lose their opening World Cup game in the 92-year history of the tournament.
Valencia became the all time scorer of Ecuador in the World Cup with five goals on his name.
The second Group A game will be between African champions Senegal and Netherlands.
Other games to be played on Monday will be in Group B. England face Iran while USA take on Wales.
