Fortebet Real Stars awards: Ikwaput, Ssesazi and Nantongo crowned as best of June


The organizers of the Fortebet Real Stars monthly awards have announced the winners in five sports disciplines for the month of June.

The five winners were rewarded at the route256 Restaurant in Lugogo, Kampala on Tuesday at the event graced by Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet.

St.Mary’s Kitende student Sylvia Nantongo was named as the best basketball player of the month after she helped Uganda progress to the 2022 FIBA U-18 Afrobasket finals.

Nantongo was the MVP and the top scorer at the U18 Zonal qualifiers that were staged at Lugogo as Uganda cruised past Rwanda and Tanzania to book a ticket to Madagascar.

She beat JKL Lady Dolphins Brenda Ekona and her Junior Gazelles teammate Mariam Namukwaya to the accolade.

In Cricket, Batsman Simon Ssesazi was the best Cricketer of the month following his astonishing performances for the Cricket Cranes at the second leg of the World Challenge League B tournament that was held last month in Kampala. Ssesazi scored a total of 202 runs as Uganda remained top of the table ahead of the third leg scheduled in Jersey.

He beat teammate Ronak Patel and Victoria Pearls’ Kevin Awino to the June gong.

In Athletics, Rachel Chebet Zena was rewarded for scooping silver in the 10000m at the African Athletics championships in Ivory Coast.

Chebet finished in a time of 32:17:06 in Ivory Coast. She beat Jacent Nyamahunge and Ronald Musagala to the Athletics award.

Fazilah Ikwaput won the football gong after her performances at the CECAFA Women’s Cup. The forward scored in five games as the Crested Cranes smiled to the title last month. She beat Hasifah Nassuna and Sandra Nabweteme who were also instrumental in Crested Cranes’ triumph.

Michael Alinga was named the best Golfer of June. He excelled at the Kenya Golf Union Chairman Prize tournament. Alunga beat Godfrey Nsubuga and the duo of Julius Borore and Joram Tumwiine.
