Uganda’s long distance runner emphatically clinched the 5000m Commonwealth title on Saturday evening at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Earlier in the week, Kiplimo smiled to the 2022 Commonwealth 10000m gold with a games record.
He powered to the 5000m gold with a time of 13 minutes and 8.08 seconds in the 20 man field on Saturday.
Kenyans Nicholas Kimei and Jacob Krop who are the fastest at the distance this year were second and third respectively.
Kiplimo becomes the third Ugandan to complete a long distance double at the games joining Joshua Cheptegei (2018 Gold Coast) and Moses Kipsiro (2010 Delhi) to have won 5000m and 10,000m gold at the same games.
Without the globe’s best long distance runner Cheptegei at the games, the onus to defend the commonwealth double for Uganda was on the Kiplimo and he 10000m bronze at the Oregon Worlds delivered.
His 5000m triumph on Saturday takes Uganda’s medal tally to four after Victor Kiplangat (Marathon) and Teddy Nakimuli (Boxing) won gold and bronze respectively
