Rugby Africa Men’s 7s officially launched

The Rugby Africa Men’s 7s tournament has officially been launched on Thursday, 7th April at the Kyadondo Rugby grounds in Kampala.

The tournament is scheduled for 23rd and 24th April 2022 and will be hosted at the Kyadondo Rugby grounds.

Representatives from Rugby Africa, Uganda Rugby Union lead partners Nile Breweries Limited through their Nile Special brand and the local organizing committe attended the launch on Thursday.

Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe is confident Uganda will win the competition this year due to the early preparations

“We kick started preparations long ago and I believe our players are in great shape to win the event.” The conditions are favourable for a event of this magnitude and all the participating teams should expect a great atmosphere.” Said Kayangwe.

Rugby Africa Vice President Andrew Owor revealed that the hospitality of Uganda was key in earning the nation the rights to stage the event

“Uganda is a nation known for its hospitality and it was very easy for us to give the nation the rights to host the tournament.” Rugby Africa President Khaled Babbou will lead a delegation from the continental body down to Kampala to honor the games.” Stated Owor

The showpiece which is also the qualifier for the Commonwealth Games and 7s Rugby World Cup will attract over 14 countries who are reigning champions Kenya, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Madagascar, Cameroon, Tunisia, Burundi, Namibia and hosts Uganda.

Uganda last hosted the event in 2017 and smiled as winners the competition during that time.
