Senegal and Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane is set to miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as per several reports.
Mane was forced off just 20 minutes into Bayern Munich’s 6-1 Bundesliga thrashing of Werder Bremen.
Bayern Assistant coach Dino Toppmöller had given some hope about the forward featuring at the global showpiece after Bayern hammered Werder:
“He got hit in the leg, which caused a little nerve pain. Nothing too serious. His participation in the World Cup shouldn’t be in jeopardy.” Said Toppmöller.
Bayern Munich have also released a statement about Mane’s injury
“Sadio Mané has picked up an injury and he won’t be available for game against Schalke. Further tests will follow in the next few days — Bayern is in contact with the medical team of Senegalese Football Association”. Read the statement
However French newspaper L’Equipe claims the injury had ended Mane’s hopes of playing at the World Cup which gets underway in Qatar on November 20th.
The two-time African player of the year finished runner-up to Karim Benzema for the Ballon d’Or award in October is pivotal to the African champions hopes of advancing to the knockout stages.
Senegal are in group A and begin their campaign against the Netherlands on November 21.
They follow up with a clash with hosts Qatar on November 25 and round off their group matches against Ecuador four days later.
