Seven games on the cards as FUFA Big League kicks off

Sinan RAJUB SENOGA

The 2022/23 StarTimes FUFA Big League officially kicks off today with seven games to be played across the country.

The league will only have 15 teams instead of the expected 16 following the demotion of Tooro United due to failure to comply with the club licensing rules.

Former Uganda Premier League sides Mbarara City, Kitara FC and Police FC start the season as the red hot favourites for the coveted topflight promotion slots.

Police FC will start a new life after suffering relegation from the topflight last season that also saw the departure of long serving club chairman Asani Kasingye.

The Cops will be under coach Angelo Lonyesi who recently returned to the club as Abdallah Mubiru’s replacement.

Lonyesi’s first task will be a home fixture against newly promoted side Lugazi FC in the televised match of the day at the Kavumba Recreation Center.

In Kakyeka, Mbarara City will host newbies Booma FC as they strive to bounce back following their relegation from the topflight after five seasons.

The Ankole Lions embarked on an overhaul that saw a number of long serving players depart the club while Sadick Sempigi remained as coach despite relegation.

Kitara FC proved to be one of the busiest teams in the pre-season and notably signed Uganda Cranes striker Patrick Kaddu among other big recruits at the club.

Mark Twinamatsiko who guided the club to the topflight promotion three seasons ago, officially returned and will be working alongside the legendary Richard Makumbi who was elevated to the role of Technical Director.

Kitara host newly promoted Northern Gateway FC at the Kigaya Primary School Grounds with an aim of earning a perfect start.

The other games on the day will see Ndejje University host Jinja North FC at the Bombo Military Grounds while Calvary FC host NEC FC at Midigo grounds in West Nile.

Luweero United play host to Kaaro Karungi at Kasana grounds in Luweero while Adjumani Town Council visit Soroti City (formerly known as Light SS) in Soroti.

Kataka FC will be the only team out of action on the opening day of the season.
