Uganda Cranes edge Tajikistan to set Navruz Cup final date with Uzbekistan


Goalkeeper Charles Lukwago saved two penalties as Uganda beat Tajikistan 5-4 in a post match shoot out following a 1-1 at full-time.

The result means Uganda will face the host nation Uzbekistan in the final of the invitational Navruz Cup.

During the normal time, Uganda scored through skipper Emmanuel Okwi before Lukwago gifted Tajikistan an equalizer towards the stroke of halftime.

Okwi marked his return to the national team with a header off a Farouk Miya delivery as early as the 7th minute.

Tajikistan levelled the game in the 39th minute when Lukwago passed the ball to Alisher Djalilov who slotted the ball into the net from close range.

The game was tied at 1-1 in the 90 minutes and immediately headed for a shoot out to determine the winning team.

Allan Kyambadde, Halid Lwaliwa, Derrick Kakooza, Rogers Mato and Fahad Bayo scored for the Cranes.

Allan Okello had an opportunity to win it for Uganda but has his penalty saved.

Lukwago however made amends and saved penalties from Alijoni Ayni and Zoir Dzhuraboev to send Uganda to the final.

Uzbekistan beat Kyrgyzstan 3-1 in the other semi final and set a date with Uganda in the final that will be played on Tuesday 29th March.
