Uganda has been confirmed as the hosting nation for this year’s CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship.

The decision was made during the CECAFA Annual General Assembly held today in Arusha, Tanzania.

While the assembly agreed that a criteria for members planning to host be drawn for the other six tournaments planned for the year, Uganda made it clear they were ready to host the Women’s Senior Championship.

The tournament will serve as a precursor for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations that will be held in Morocco in July this year.

The idea was fronted by Eng. Moses Magogo, the FUFA president who suggested that the tournament will help Burundi and Uganda prepare for the AWCON tournament.

Burundi beat Djibouti 11-1 to qualify for the AWCON tournament for the first time in history while Uganda earned a walk over past Kenya to book a ticket in the final tournament.

The AGM which was attended by all CECAFA members apart from Kenya who are banned by FIFA, accepted that Uganda hosts the championship with the dates to be announced later.

Last year, the tournament was meant to be hosted in Djibouti but they pulled out since their national stadium was undergoing renovation.

The last CECAFA Women’s Senior Championship was held in 2019 in Dar es Salaam and was won by Kenya.

This will be the second time Uganda will be hosting the tournament with the first one being in 2016 at FUFA Technical Center in Njeru.

The other CECAFA tournaments that are expected to be staged this year include the AFCON U-17 qualifiers, AFCON U-20 qualifiers, CECAFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers, Pan African School qualifiers, CECAFA Kagame Cup and the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup.
