Yanga stretch lead with hard fought win over Azam

Azam FC 1-2 Young Africans

Young Africans went 14 points clear on the top of the Tanzania NBC Premier League table after edging rivals Azam FC 2-1 in a game played at the Azam Complex.

Congolese duo of right back Djuma Shaban and red hot striker Fiston Mayele scored the two goals for Yanga as they rallied from a goal down.

Azam took an early lead through Zimbabwean midfielder Rodgers Kola in the 10th minute.

Yanga were awarded a penalty after a howler from Azam goalkeeper Ahmed Salula which was flawlessly converted by Djuma in the 18th minute.

The game was tied at 1-1 for a large spell until Mayele rose to the occasion and won all three points in the 79th minute.

The former AS Vita striker struck a beautiful volley from within the area following a teasing cross from his compatriot Djuma.

Mayele currently leads the scorers list with 11 goals.

Both sides didn’t have Ugandans in action. Goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya was an unused substitute while his team Nicholas Wadada is recovering from injury just like Yanga’s Khalid Aucho.

Young Africans have now garnered 51 points, 14 more than second placed Simba and 21 more than Azam FC who are third placed.

Yanga who are also the only unbeaten side in the league after 19 games, will face Geita Gold in the ASF Cup in their next game on Sunday before facing rivals Simba on 30th April.
