Uganda Hippos (U-20) will kickoff their AFCON U20 campaign against Central African Republic in a group B contest on Monday.
Head coach Jackson Mayanja is confident that his charges will prevail at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium, Ismailia.
“Since my first day with this amazing team, the intention has been clear and that is to qualify the team to the World Cup and everything must start against Central African Republic.” Mayanja stated
Hippos captain Isma Mugulusi asserted that they in the tournament to compete and meet their target of advancing to the World Cup due in May/June this year.
“We are happy and in good mood as players. We are thinking about nothing but this tournament and the first game against Central African Republic is very important to us if we are to achieve our mission of going to the World Cup.” Said the Greece based midfieder
Mugulusi, Titus Ssematimba, Travis Mutyaba and Patrick Kakande are expected to lift up the Hippos against Central African Republic.
Uganda finished as runners up in the last edition that was staged in Mauritania. Ghana beat the Hippos 2-0 in the final.
Mayanja’s side played eight friendly games, seven in Uganda and one against hosts Egypt, they won six, lost once and drew one.
In the other encounter from the same group, South Sudan will take on Congo Brazaville.
