Gazelles may feature at 2023 FIBA Afrobasket despite loss to Egypt

David GOMBE

Uganda’s Women National basketball team (Gazelles) are likely to feature at the 2023 FIBA Afrobasket despite their final loss to Egypt.

The Gazelles lost to Egypt 74- 65 in a Zone Five Championship Final on Sunday at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

According to the latest information the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) is confident that Uganda will get a Wild Card that will see them take part in the event due in Kigali, Rwanda from July/August.

A wild card is a tournament or playoff berth awarded to an individual or team that fails to qualify in the normal way; for example, by having a high ranking or winning a qualifying stage. In some events, wildcards are chosen freely by the organizers.

If the Gazelles get the Wild Card, they will return to the continental Showpiece for the first since the 2015 edition.

Countries such as Kenya and DR Congo got Wild Cards to make it to the 2019 edition while Central African Republic prevailed to the 2017.
