Kawempe Muslim football teams clinched a historic double after winning both the girls and football titles during the 2023 UMEA Solidarity Games held at Kawanda SS.
The Kawempe girls team won a record extending title after defeating Kawempe Muslim B team 1-0 in the final played after round robin games.
Highly rated teenage sensation Hadijah Nandago scored the all important goal of the encounter in the 29th minute.
Masaka Secondary School won bronze after finishing third behind the Kawempe Muslim A and B teams.
In the boys category, Kawempe won their first ever title after defeating Madina Islamic 1-0 in a rain laden final.
Geoffrey Kidega scored the decisive goal from close range in the first half of the game.
The Moses Nkata coached team beat rivals Kibuli SS 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the semi final while Madina Islamic edged Greenlight Nansana with the same margin after a goalless full-time.
Kibuli subsequently won the bronze after beating Greenlight Nansana 3-1 in the third place play off.
Kawempe’s Shakira Nyinagahirwa and Kibuli’s Kenneth Kimera finished as the top scorers in both categories with 14 and 9 goals respectively.
At the end of the day, Kibuli were crowned the overall winners of this year’s UMEA Solidarity Games after winning a total of five gold medals.
Kibuli SS and Kawempe Muslim will renew acquaintances in the Kampala Region semi finals on Thursday at 10am at Uganda Martyrs Rubaga.
