Men’s marathon world record holder Kiptum killed in road accident

Kenya’s Marathoner Kelvin Kiptum has passed away died in a road accident in his home country.

He died alongside his coach, Rwanda’s Gervais Hakizimana in western Kenya on Sunday.

Kiptum was the current men’s marathon world record holder. In October last year, he broke compatriot Eliud Kipchoge’s world record in Chicago.

Kiptum bettered the two time Olympic champion’s achievement, clocking the (42km) in two hours and 35 seconds.

According to Police in Kenya, the road accident happened at about 23:00 local time on Sunday.

His coach, Hakizimana was a retired Rwandese runner and he was instrumental in helping Kiptum break the men’s marathon world record.
