Three-time and reigning world 10000m champion Joshua Cheptegei will run his first race of 2024 at the Laredo 10K in Spain on Saturday, 16th March.

In Laredo, Cheptegei will be seeking to seal a 10000m ticket to the 2024 Olympic games due in Paris.

Cheptegei won Gold at the 5000m distance at the Tokyo game and his main objective this year will be to clinch the 10000m gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

During the 2020 Tokyo games, Cheptegei finished second in the 10000m race. He won silver after finishing behind Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega.

In case he had won Gold at the distance in Tokyo, he would have had a wildcard to the Paris Games.

Last year, the Ugandan icon won his third consecutive 10000m World title in Budapest in a time of 27 minutes and 51:42 seconds, which was outside the qualification time for Paris.

Cheptegei is yet to run the 10K race since his triumph two years ago in Cannes, France and will need a standard of 27 minutes in Loredo to secure qualification to the 10000m race in Paris.

For starters, the qualification window for the 10000m to Paris will run until July, 1st, 2024.
