Lt Col Eng Peter Kidemuka of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Civil engineers Brigade has confirmed that there are proposals to roof Mandela National Stadium in Namboole during the second phase of the construction works at the facility.
Kidumuka also revealed that phase one of the construction works is done and now focus will turn to phase that will include making the VVIP area big.
“It is a plan, they come and can be implemented or not but as of now phase one works are done. The proposal now is we need to make the VVIP area very big to accommodate many state leaders and many VVIPs. So there’s a proposal of section 12, 13 and 14 will be put down and then the whole stadium will be roofed, so it is a proposal and we are waiting for phase two work but as of now phase one work is done.” Said Kidemuka during an interview with CK Media

Phase of the construction works included the leveling and grass planting exercise at the 42,000 seater capacity Stadium.
The installation of seats in the stands, Screen, running track and renovations on the floodlights and changing rooms among others.
The Shs97 billion rehabilitation project commenced in 2022 and during that time it has met a number of challenges such as land wrangles and delayed delivery of supplies, among others.
Namboole has so far, this year hosted seven international matches (Two World Cup qualifier matches for the Cranes as well as two AFCON qualifiers. Kenya and Zimbabwe have also hosted their AFCON 2025 qualifiers at the facility.
