Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje has revealed some of the reasons why Ugandans players fail to succeed in top leagues abroad.

While speaking during the Technical Stakeholders engagement at Jevine Hotel on Tuesday, Mawejje who serves as assistant coach at Uganda Premier league side Wakiso Giants FC enjoyed an illustrious career outside Uganda in Iceland with IBV Vestmannaeyjar, Haugesund in Norway, Throttur, KF Tirana in Albania and a short stint in South Africa and Kuwait with Golden Arrows and Al Arabi SC respectively.

According to coach Mawejje, Ugandan players fail to make the grade since they miss home life.

“The mental aspect of the game is where the player goes to a foreign land, goes under challenges and resists them endeavors to go whatever it takes. But our players here when they go out there, they miss friends, family and the life in Kampala and when his paid the money, he thinks I have to go back and enjoy. Eventually he goes off the track.” Said Mawejje

During his playing day, Mawejje was a main stay in the Uganda Cranes fold for a period of 15 years, he managed 83 caps and 8 goals.

He started his career with now defunct Masaka LC in early 2000s and later played for KCCA, URA and Police (twice) in Uganda.
