The Nigerian Federal government has demanded for investigations into the death of Vipers SC forward Abubaker Lawal.
Lawal died on Monday morning with Police Preliminary Reports indicating that he fell off the balcony of Voice Shopping Mall in Bwebajja.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) revealed that the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has demanded a full autopsy and thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
“This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover up at all . This is so sad!
” The Nigerian government will ensure and demand a thorough and transparent investigation. May his soul Rest in Peace and God give the family the fortitude to bear this loss.” Dabiri-Erewa disclosed in the statement signed by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, NiDCOM Abdur-Rahman Baligun.
It was also established that Lawal had gone to meet his Tanzanian friend Omary Naima who was residing in room 416 since February 20th 2025.
According to Police, Naima revealed that she left Lawal in the room preparing team and proceeded to the game center within the mall.
Police also confirmed that items which included two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, training kit and chargers belonging to the deceased were found in his backpack.
Lawal’s last league appearance for Vipers was away to KCCA FC on 16th February and was unused substitute in the Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 32 victory over Mbarara City on 20th February.
This season, the Nigerian had made eight appearances for the six time Uganda Premier league champions whom he joined in July 2022.
On Thursday, 27th February, Vipers SC will hold Duwa prayers for Lawal at St.Mary’s Stadium in Kitende. Lawal won the 2022/23 league title and Stanbic Uganda Cup trophy with the club.
