Two Nigerian forwards eye UPL Moves

Nigerian wingers Shabanya Jonathan and Richard Jonathan are eyeing moves to the Uganda Premier league this transfer window.

Shabanya who has featured for clubs such as Elkanemi Warriors FC, Bayelsa United FC, Jigawa Golden Stars FC, Kebbi United FC, Kada Warriors FC asserts that he is impressed with how the Uganda Premier league has improved.

“I have been following the Uganda Premier league since the late Abubaker Lawal joined Vipers and I was impressed with stadiums and environment. The league seems to be very competitive, I have been watching a few games on the Internet.” I hope I get a chance to join one of the top clubs in the country.”

Richard Jonathan also a winger asserts that he was inspired by how Lawal made his name in Uganda and would like to also get a move to the East African club.

“Yes, I played with Lawal at Wikki Tourist FC but I got inspired with how he played in the Uganda Premier league winning titles and the love he was shown by the Ugandans. It’s absurd that he passed on but I think above all he had a wonderful career in Uganda. I hope I can get a chance also and showcase my potential at one of the clubs in Uganda.” Said Richard

Richard Jonathan has previously featured for Rangers FC, Elkanemi Warriors FC and Wikki Tourist FC.

Shabanya believes a move to Lawal’s former club Vipers SC, URA FC or BUL FC could be great for him in this transfer window. The transfer window in Uganda officially opens on Tuesday July, 1st 2025.
