Five time Buganda Masaza Cup winners Gomba have confirmed the departure of coach Simon Ddungu alias Dunga.

Ddungu who led Buddu to the Masaza Cup triumph last year made a return to Gomba in a bid to lead them to the sixth title.

But he has had a horrendous period at Gomba losing all three group games he has been in charge.

Gomba confirmed Ddungu’s exit in a statement released on Tuesday,

“The management of Gomba Lions has agreed with coach Simon Ddungu aka Dunga to end his responsibility as our head coach for the 2025 Masaza Cup tournament. We thank him for the time he has been with us.”

Ddungu’s final game in charge of Gomba was a 2-1 defeat to Busujju on Sunday. Before his side had lost both of their opening two Bulange Group games to Buddu and Ssese, both ending in 1-0 defeats respectively.

Gomba have also confirmed the Simon Ggita who has been serving as Ddungu’s assistant to take over on interim basis as the search for a new head coach continues.

This website understands that former Mawokota head coach Richard Malinga who led Buddo SS to the national schools football title is the favourite to take over at Gomba who next face Buluuli.

Gomba who had their journey last term end at the group stage are currently rock bottom of Bulange Group with no point. They have previously won the prestigious event five times in 2004, 2009, 2014, 2017 and 2020.
