Rogers Mato joins David Obua’s former side in Europe

Uganda cranes forward Rogers Mato signs for Scottish side Heart of Midlothian from North Macedonia side FK Vardar.

The Ugandan attacker will join the Scottish side at the end of this season having signed a pre-contract.

Heart of Midlothian announced Mato’s capture in a statement,

“We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with Ugandan international forward Rogers Mato to become a Hearts player in the summer.” Read a statement from Heart of Midlothian.

Mato signed a three year employment contract with the Edinburgh based side.

He becomes only the fourth Ugandan to play for Heart of Midlothian after legendary David Obua, Toby Sibbick and Mubiru Ikpeazu.

Mato has also been a transfer target for Turkish side Trabzonspor and Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City.

Mato has previously featured for Proline FC and KCCA FC in Uganda before joining Sanliurfaspor in Turkey.

He has also played for Fudbalski Klub Akademija Pandev Brera Strumica in North Macedonia.

Mato was one of the three Uganda Cranes players who scored at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Karl Anthony Uchechukwu Mubiru Ikpeazu plays at St.Johnstone and John Jordan Obita at Hibernian are other Uganda Cranes players who feature in Scotland.
