Five students perish in road accident while traveling for USSSA football matches

Five students of Iki-iki Senior Secondary School have perished in a road accident on Tuesday, 24th March 2026 enroute to Kamonkoli Seed Secondary School in Budaka District.

The students where heading Kamonkoli Seed SS to participate in the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) football competition.

The accident that claimed five students with several injured occurred along the Mbale–Tirinya Highway, Mbale, Uganda at Jami in Kamonkoli Town Council, when the truck registration number UAP 443Z that was transporting students lost control before overturning.

According to Sports Nation, the driver who was transporting the students is in police custody on charges related to reckless driving, overloading, and operating a vehicle in poor mechanical condition.

Injured students are currently at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Iki-Iki Secondary who are in Group D of the competition kicked off their campaign with narrow 1-0 win over Grace Comprehensive before a 1-0 defeat against Bugwere High on the opening day.

Iki-iki SS had two games lined up on day two, facing Ngoma Standard and the derby against Iki-Iki High.

Budaka Moslem Primary playground, Saza playground and Jami Primary playground are the other venues hosting the Budaka USSSA fixtures 2026.

The development comes days aftef another accident that involved Red Devo fans claimed eight lives after their Uganda Cup exit over Express FC last Friday.
