The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga has announced plans to develop Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.
While addressing the media on Tuesday as he celebrated 13-years in office, Mayiga unveiled plans to have the facility developed.
“Kabaka wants us to develop Wankulukuku stadium. It has a management committee that is led by Kabaka’s sister (Naalinya). We are going to recruit a formidable, professional and experienced CEO to run a secretariat that we are about to set up to run the facility.”
“The arrangement was in place even before the abolishment of the kingdoms. The arrangement was from Sweden. But now, there are even encroachers on the land which we have to srot but indeed the stadium needs to be developed to the desired standard,” Said Owek Mayiga as quoted by Sports Torch website

Last weekend, the stadium hosted its first ever competitive match under the lights when Musu thrashed Nte 3-1 in the Bika Byabaganda football competition.
Wankulukuku has also hosted the prestigious Buganda Masaza Cup games as well as the University Football league matches. Most recently it hosted the Rugby Enterprise Cup.
The Venue has also served as the home ground for Uganda Premier League clubs such as SC Villa and Express FC.
Ahead of the CHAN 2024 that was hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania last year, Wankulukuku got a lift with floodlights installed and works were be done on the V.I.P wing, the dressing rooms and the toilets since the facility was among the training venues for the championship in East Africa.
