Absa Chairman’s Bell Tees Off as Basil Atinoi Makes His Mark in Inaugural Caddies Tournament

The 2026 Absa Chairman’s Bell Golf Tournament got off to a thrilling start today at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, with the newly introduced Caddies Tournament taking centre stage. A total of 71 caddies teed off in this new addition to the week-long event, which has been expanded into a four-in-one spectacle now featuring Caddies, Gross Amateurs, Professionals, and the Main Event.

The Caddies Tournament is a new introduction aimed at recognising the vital role caddies play in the sport while providing them with a platform to develop their skills and gain competitive exposure. With a prize kitty of UGX. 2 million dedicated to the caddies’ category, the competition was fierce as participants showcased their talent on the par-72 course.

After a day of intense competition, Basil Atinoi won the men’s category with a score of 1-over-73 and JoweriaNamanda was overall outstanding lady with 7-over-78.

Akorabirungi Ronald, UGC Caddie Master and one of today’s participants, expressed his excitement about the new categorysaying, “This is a dream come true for many of us. For years, we have been the unseen hands behind the game, and today Absa has given us a stage to show what we can do. It means everything to be recognised and to compete alongside fellow caddies who share the same passion.”

UGC Chairman Paul Nuwagaba hailed the successful launch of the Caddies Tournament and shared how the addition enriches the traditional tournament now in its 8th year with Absa;

“It’s important that we organise the whole system in which we play this game, and there are many facets including caddies who are very helpful but not just furniture on the course. We thank Absa for coming up quite strongy on this particular occasion as we continue growing the game and creating inclusive opportunities for all who are passionate about golf.”

The action continues from Tuesday as over 250 participants inthe Gross Amateurs and Professionals begin their campaignsand build momentum toward Saturday’s highly anticipated Main Event. The week-long tournament, sponsored by Absa Bank Uganda with a total commitment of UGX. 185 million, promises to deliver more thrilling golf as Uganda’s finest talents compete across all categories.
