National Trials to go Ahead as Planned, confirms UBF Interim Committee chairman Rukundo

The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) Interim Committee led by Olympian Sam Rukundo has confirmed that the National Trials scheduled for this month will go ahead as earlier communicated.
While addressing the media at Grand Plaza Hotel in Kampala, Rukundo revealed that they are yet to receive any communication from the National Council of Sports (NCS) stopping them from carrying out any boxing activity.
“We are still in charge of amateur boxing and we are yet to receive any communication from the National Council of Sports regarding suspension of our event. The event will go on as earlier communicated and several boxers are ready to take part in the trials due to begin this Friday,” said Rukundo.
On Tuesday, a document from NCS dated 15th September stated that the national sports governing body was concerned with the manner in which some unscrupulous persons were organizing boxing events without clearance from the respective Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF).
“We have written several letters to the National Council of Sports and we know them for calling press conferences in case of any matter regarding sports. What we are doing is not just for our own benefit but for the good of boxing,” Rukundo added.
Rukundo also asserted that over 100 boxers had already registered for the trials scheduled for September 19th to 21st.
After the trials, the final selected team will represent the country at the IBA Africa Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championship, slated for October 19th to November 1st, 2026, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kinshasa is set to become the action centre of continental boxing once again, playing host to the prestigious championship at the Stade des Martyrs Gym.
Zambia, Cape Verde, Kenya, South Africa and Morocco are among the countries that have confirmed participation in the prestigious tournament.
