The football fraternity will be eagerly waiting for the outcome from another consultative meeting between Uganda Premier League clubs and FUFA over the new league format the judgement day is scheduled for Tuesday, 9th September 2025.

After last week’s meeting that was attended by 13 clubs with BUL FC, UPDF FC and Buhimba Saints, FUFA President Eng.Moses Magogo told journalists at Serena that they may drop or proceed with the new league format.

Hours after the meeting, FUFA through a letter from it’s CEO Edgar Watson presented clubs with two choices either to accept the new league format and benefit from the Shs3.4Bn or reject it and the money goes to the FUFA Big League for the next three seasons.

Last month, after Uganda’s 3-0 defeat to Algeria in the just concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. There was a crisis meeting chaired by President Museveni in the presence of the First Lady and minister of education and sports Janet Museveni in the State House.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, the state minister for sports Hon. Peter Ogwang, FUFA Executive committee member Ronnie Kalema, the Attorney General and former Express FC chairman Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the National council of sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Ogwel were the other attendees in the meeting.

According to Sports Torch during that meeting Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, revealed that FUFA had ignored his calls to give the struggling Uganda Premier league clubs money off the Shs19bn (current) ring-fenced annual budget since they are the ones that make national team players.

“I have written to FUFA several times advising them to give clubs money in vain,” Kiwanuka reportedly stated.

The Kiryowa family is a formidable name in Uganda’s football administration. Kiryowa Kiwanuka is a grandson to Express FC founder Joseph, Jolly Kiwanuka.

Reports indicate that this is the reason why FUFA was tempted to extend Shs25m to each of the club accounts.

After the previous meeting, the clubs through Dr.Lawrence Mulindwa told FUFA to channel the Shs3.4bn into the existing format rather than the new structure.

According to the Daily Monitor, the clubs are now escalating the standoff by seeking the intervention of First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, over the controversial new league format and Fufa’s threat to withdraw the funding and channel to Big League.
