Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje says he was “like a horse with blinkers” when KCCA FC made an approach to sign him, revealing he turned down a more lucrative offer from SC Villa.

While speaking with journalist Alex Mugalu, Mawejje revealed how former KCCA FC boss Mike Mutebi convinced him to sign for KCCA but SC Villa were also keen on the Midfielder.

“I grew up in Masaka where most people were staunch SC Villa fans but it was Masaka LC that gave me a platform. After my first year at Masaka LC, i attracted the attention of clubs such as SC Villa and KCCA. It was SC Villa who had an upper hand since most of the people at Masaka LC were staunch Villa fans including club Patron Vincent Ssempijja.” Narrates Mawejje before adding how he met with SC Villa’s Hajji Omar Mandela and late Andrew Zzimwe Kasagga

“The leaders at Masaka LC took me to Hajji Omar Mandela and Andrew Zimwe but by then i had just left school and the law couldn’t permit me get a license, so they told me to return to Masaka and play there for at least one more year.”

How KCCA through Mutebi and Juma Midi convinced him

“After my second season at Masaka LC, KCCA got more interested in my signature and through coach Mike Mutebi and Midi Juma they convinced me and promised to get me a school . Villa who were first took it for granted since they thought the deal had already been agreed and were comfortable.”

“When KCCA brought the money, Villa then returned with a better offer which was twice than that of KCCA. Coach Mutebi had however told me that if i touch money from another team, i will be imprisoned. I was like i have just started my career i can’t risk being in prison, so that’s how i ended up at KCCA and since then i am a fan of the club.”
