Uganda’s legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango and his Mamelodi Sundowns have won the 2026 CAF Champions League following their 2-1 aggregate win over FAR Rabat.
Sundowns who won the first leg meeting 1-0 in South Africa needed a draw in the return leg at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium to win the title.
The return fixture ended in a 1-1 stalemate with Mohamed Hrimat scoring for the home side with Teboho Mokoena leveling matters for the visitors.
South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved Hrimat penalty late in the contest as Sundowns won their first CAF Champions League title in a decade. Their maiden Champions league triumph came in 2016.
Sundowns win the title 2-1 on aggregate with goalkeeper Onyango reportedly being sent off the bench for throwing a water bottle to the fans at halftime during celebrations.
Onyango was instrumental in Sundowns’ triumph ten years ago along with Thembo Zwane, both smile to their second African title.
Sundowns had won the league eight seasons in a row prior to this, but the CAF Champions League had eluded them for a decade filled with near misses in pursuit of a second star on top of their crest. Miguel Cardoso, who was appointed head coach in December of 2024, headed into Sunday’s final knowing his legacy at the club may depend on Sunday’s result and indeed his charges delivered glory.
