Ringo, Ojok power into respective finals as Uganda guarantees more medals at Africa Boxing Championship

David GOMBE

Uganda’s heavyweight boxer Aziz Abdul Ringo prevailed to the final of the 2026 African Boxing Championships with a win over Angola’s Adilson Luta Mabanza on Wednesday.

Ringo overcame Mabanza 3-2 in the heavyweight division (85-90kg) to keep his hopes of winning gold alive at the inaugural championship in Kinshasa.

Alfred Ojok’s also reached the final after his middleweight semi-final Referee stop contest victory over Tanzania’s Amos Tryphone Mberwa on Thursday morning. He will battle with Egypt’s Elawady Omar in the last bout of the championship.

Ringo and Ojok joins other Ugandans in contention for gold Samuel Nsubuga, Mulungi Kassim and Vanessa Nagawa.

Nsubuga powered past Kenya’s Emmanuel Odhiambo 5-0 to reach the bantamweight final, while Mulungi stopped Algeria’s Hichem Maouche in the third round by referee-stop contest (RSC).

Nagawa made it to the final with a superb 5-0 victory over Algeria’s Douaa Rouaz in the women’s featherweight division.

Meanwhile, cruiserweight Arafat Kibirige (80-85kg) suffered a knockout defeat to Angola’s Moses Chiangulula, while light-heavyweight Richard Kasujja (75-80kg) bowed out with a 5-0 defeat to Algeria’s Mustapha Abdou.

Uganda’s women’s flyweight boxer Brendah Muduwa (48-51kg) lost 5-0 against Kenya’s Veronica Mbithe.

Despite the defeats, Kibirige, Muduwa and Kasujja will not return home empty-handed as they are all assured of bronze medals.

Alfred Ojok’s also reached the final after his semi-final middleweight bout Referee stop contest victory over Tanzania’s Amos Tryphone Mberwa on Thursday morning. He will battle with Egypt’s Elawady Omar in the last bout of the championship.
