Kitara bow out of CAF Confederation Cup after Al Ahly thumping

David GOMBE

Uganda’s continental representatives Kitara FC have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup following a return leg defeat away to Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Cairo.

Kitara travelled to Cairo on the back of a 2-1 home defeat and needed to score two unanswered goals to progress to the group phase of the competition.

It was, however, the hosts who smiled to a 4-0 triumph at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.

Al Ahly cruised to victory thanks to goals from Hussein El Shahat, who netted a brace, Mohamed Magdy Afsha, and Taher Mohamed, as the Egyptians stormed into the group phase.

Al Ahly advanced to the group stage with a 6-1 aggregate scoreline, while Kitara will now pack their bags and focus on domestic competitions.

Meanwhile, DR Congo’s AS Maniema Union and South Africa’s Durban City also advanced in convincing fashion to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday after completing dominant aggregate victories in their second preliminary round ties.

Maniema Union defeated Angola’s Kabuscorp 4-1 in the second leg to go through 8-2 on aggregate.

Durban City beat AS Port Louis 2000 3-0 to complete a 6-1 aggregate success and book their place in the next phase for the first time in the club’s history.
