Cheptegei breaks Bekele’s 15 year old 10000m world record

Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei is the new 10,000m world record holder.

The legendary runner broke Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele’s 10,000metres record on Wednesday night in a special NN world Record Day in Valencia.

The World Record Day took place at Valencia Turia stadium with 400 people present.

Cheptegei clocked 26.11.00 to break Bekele’s 15 year old world record. The Ethiopian long standing marks was set in Brussels in August 2005 with a time of 26:17.53.

For starters, the Ugandan icon set a new world 5Km road record in Monaco back in February and in August, he returned to Monaco and broke Bekele’s 16 year old 5000m record with a new mark of 12:35.36.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey clocked 14 minutes 6.62 seconds to set a new 5000m women record. She bettered the 14mins 11.15 seconds set by her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba in Oslo, Norway 2008. Both Cheptegei and Gidey had pacesetters during their historic runs in Valencia.
