Mixed results for debutants, Kayondo gets off the mark : How Ugandan foreign based players performed over the weekend

Club action resumed over the concluded weekend and a number of Ugandan players were involved with their respective clubs across the globe.

The 2022/23 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup season kicked off with mixed results for Ugandan players at the preliminary round.

Left back Aziz Kayondo, striker Derrick Kakooza and Sadam Masereka were scorers while Ismail Watenga, Taddeo Lwanga and Fred Nkata debuted for their respective clubs.

CAF Champions League

Left back Fred Nkata made his debut for Congolese giants Otoho d’Oyo and lost 2-0 to Cape Town in South Africa.

Yasin Mugabi wasn’t part of the Red Arrows match day squad as they lost to Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto 1-0 in Zambia.

Khalid Aucho played for Young Africans in their 4-0 win over South Sudan’s Zalan FC in Dar es Salaam.

Charles Lukwago played for St. George and helped them clinch a 2-1 win over Florent Ibenge’s Al Hilal Omdurman in Ethiopia.

Taddeo Lwanga made his debut for Arta Solar 7 but lost 2-1 to El Merriekh. Former Express FC striker Erick Kambale came off the bench to score El Merriekh’s equalizer in the 83rd minute.

Goalkeeper Sulait Luyima was an unused substitute for Arta Solar 7 after returning from injury.

CAF Confederation Cup

New signing Edward Satulo didn’t travel with AS Kigali to face AS Djibouti Telecom. The game ended goalless.

Joshua Kigozi didn’t play for Burundi’s Bumamuru FC as they lost 3-0 to Fasil Kenema in Bahir Dar. His compatriot and former Kyetume teammate James Ssemambo was on the bench.

USA

Aziz Kayondo scored his first goal for Real Monarchs as they came from two goals down to hold San Jose Earthquakes II in the Next Pro League. Real Monarchs eventually won the encounter in a post match penalty shoot out.

Musa Ramathan was withdrawn at the start of the second half as his FC Cincinnati II drew goalless with Chicago Fire II in the Next Pro League.

Mike Azira played 67 minutes in New Mexico United’s 3-1 defeat to Rio Grande Valley. He was replaced by Will Seymore.

Steven Sserwadda was an unused substitute as New York Red Bulls beat New England Revolution 2-1 in the Major League Soccer.

Ibrahim Ssekagya’s coached side New York Red Bull II lost 7-1 to Miami in the USL championship.

Pittsburgh River hound’s striker Edward Kizza came off the bench in the 75th minute in a 0-0 draw with Louisville City in the USL Championship.

Sadam Masereka scored a goal and assisted another to inspire Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders to a 3-3 draw with Keiser Seahawks.

South Africa

Ismail Watenga made his debut for Marumo Gallants in their 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs in the DStv Premiership.

Denis Onyango was an unused substitute in Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-1 win over Golden Arrows.

Shafik Batambuze didn’t play for Singida Big Stars as they played a goalless draw against Dodoma Jiji.

Joseph Zziwa (Coastal Union) and Polisi Tanzania’s Ambrose Awio were on the bench as their clubs faced off.

Joseph Ssemujju played for Abdallah Mubiru’s Mbeya City as they drew 1-1 with Tanzania Prisons.

Miya Farouk played full-time in Caykur Rizespor’s 1-1 draw with Samsunspor in the Turkish second tier.

Rayon Sports striker Musa Esenu featured in the 1-0 win over Rwanda Police FC.

Striker Mahad Kayondo played for CSM Deva and helped his side win 3-0 against ACS Simian despite missing on the score sheet.

Herbert Bockhorn made his debut for Germany Bundesliga 2 side Magdeburg as they won 2-1 over Greuther Furth.

Right back Elvis Bwomono played full-time for IBV Vestmannaeyjar in a 2-2 draw with Fram Reykjavik.

Azerbaijan

William Kizito came off the bench as his club FK Sabail lost 2-1 to FK Zira.

Zambia

Keziron Kizito played for Zesco United in the 2-1 win over Lumwana Radiants while his teammate Alfred Leku started on the bench.

Hashim Sempala was on the bench as Kabwe Warriors beat TP Mazembe 1-0 in a friendly game.

Kenya

Peter Lwasa scored Gor Mahia’s lone goal in a 2-1 defeat to Bandari in a friendly game in Mombasa. Both William Wadri and Umar Kasumba played for Bandari.

North Macedonia

Halid Lwaliwa couldn’t make his debut for his new side Bregalnica Stip who lost to FK Pobeda on Sunday.

Tunisia

Defender Richard Kasagga featured in Olympic Beja’s 5-0 win over African Team FC.

Algeria

Allan Okello wasn’t part of the Paradou AC squad that drew 1-1 with ASO Chelf in the league.

Serbia

Pius Obuya came off the bench as his club Radnick Mitrovica Sremska beat FK Rad Beograd 2-0 in the Serbian second tier. Obuya was also yellow carded in the closing stages of the game.

Portugal

Left back Mustafa Kizza wasn’t part of Arouca’s match day squad that lost 2-1 to Boavista in the Primeira Liga.

Czech Republic

Left back Isaac Muleme played in Viktoria Zizkov’s 5-0 win over FK Banik Sous in the Czech third tier. Muleme was later replaced by Ondrej Zezulka.

Timothy Awany played an integral part in Ashdod FC’s hard fought 0-0 draw with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Left back Victor Matovu played for his new club UD Mutilvera and guided them to a 1-0 win over AD San Juan in the Spanish fourth tier.

Striker Derrick Kakooza came off the bench and scored in the 63rd minute as his club Valmiera II won 5-0 over FK Smiltene.

Finland

Ruth Aturo played part in KTP Women’s 11-0 win over FC Hertta on Saturday.

Striker Ibrah Sekajja came off the bench in the 64th minute as his club AC Oulu won 6-1 over HIFK FC. Sekajja replaced Nicklas Jokelainen.
