Uganda International Para, Africa Para Badminton tournaments officially launched

The Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) has officially launched two para badminton tournaments at the MTN Indoor Arena, Lugogo.

The Uganda International Para badminton tournament will serve off on Tuesday, 13th to Sunday 18th September at the MTN Indoor Arena.

The Africa Para will start on Monday next week at the same venue.

National Council of Sports (NCS) assistant General Secretary David Katende has hailed the BWF for giving Uganda the opportunity to host the tournaments

“I take this opportunity to thank BWF for giving Uganda the opportunity to host these two tournaments. The events are going to give our athletes a chance to showcase themselves and I thank Uganda Badminton Association for the efforts to look for sponsors.” Said Katende

Simon Mugabi the Uganda Badminton Association CEO stated that the tournaments are all the world and carry world ranking points.

“The tournaments are all over the world and carry world ranking points that help athletes qualify for World championships and Paralympics in Paris 2024. Uganda is well prepared for this event after the two months training held and we have fielded 54 athletes in all categories.”

185 athletes from 19 countries have confirmed participation in the Uganda International Para Badminton that will have five categories including Men and Women singles, Men and Women doubles alongside the mixed doubles.

Athletes will participate in Wheelchair One, Wheelchair Two, Standing Lower Three (SL3), Standing Lower Four (SL4), Standing Upper Five (SU5) and Short Stecher.

 

Outstanding performers will receive trophies and medals as well as booking tickets to the World Championships and Paralympics.

Egypt, Japan, Spain, Singapore, Scotland, India, Azerbaijan, DR Congo, Ivory Coast, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Italy, Central African Republic and hosts Uganda are among the participating nations confirmed.

Countries such as Niger, Italy, Brazil, Cameroon and Madagascar have withdrawn from this year’s Uganda International para badminton.
