Masaka Recreation Grounds upgrading officially launched

The reconstruction process of the Masaka Recreation Ground commonly known as Liiku in Masaka was officially launched on Thursday, 25th April.

Masaka Catholic Diocesan Bishop Serverus Jumba, Masaka City Mayor Florence Namayanja and other region leaders were in attendance.

Masaka Recreation Grounds sits on 7 acres and it’s located in Masaka City.

The project that will see the refurbishment of oldest sports facility in greater Masaka will cost over Shs20Bn.

According to the contractor of the project, Kalera construction the main focus will be on playing surface and construction of the eastern and western pavilions.

The Stadium was inaugurated in 1954 by Sir Andrew Cohen, the British Governor of the colony.

Since its official 1954 opening by Cohen, Masaka Recreation Centre has not had any major renovation and part of the facility was destroyed during the 1979 liberation war that ended Iddi Amin’s leadership.

Masaka Recreation has previously hosted Uganda Premier league games and it’s the host venue for two time Buganda Masaza Cup winners Buddu.
