Vipers seek double over UPDF in bid to keep title defense alive

Vipers SC will aim to complete a double over UPDF FC when the two sides face off at Bombo Military grounds on Wednesday.

The Venoms won the first round meeting 4-0 at St.Mary’s Stadium in Kitende. The defending champions are third on the UPL log with 32 points in 17 games.

UPDF have had positive results since the turn of the year, having lost just one game with three wins and three draws in 2023.

In their previous league fixture, the Army side played out to a 1-1 stalemate with title challengers KCCA FC at Lugogo. Brian Ssenyondo coached side is currently 12th on the log with 22 points in 21 matches.

Vipers have won their previous two games 2-0 against Blacks Power and 4-1 thrashing of Calvary FC in the Uganda Cup. Their head coach Alex Isabirye believes they have a great opportunity to maximize points in Bombo

“We have got another opportunity to go away and try and build on our recent performances and try to get an away win. If we do, we will creep closer to where we want to be. It’s going to be a tough game but we are in a good place, we want to go there and be really tough to beat.” Isabirye as quoted by the club website.

UPDF will be without Kiggundu Moses due to injury as well as Goalkeeper Simon Mabuya.

Nsimbe Badru Jibril and Kimuli Gerald are in contention having missed th game against KCCA.

The Venoms will be without a couple of players through respective injuries. Angolan midfielder Miguel Nzau Lutumba and Marvin Joseph Youngman are out.

Siraje Sentamu, Bright Anukani and Karim Watambala are progressing well and back in full training. The trio is however expected to return against URA FC on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza is still sidelined with a finger a injury.
