Joel Mutakubwa was the hero as BUL FC won the 2023 FUFA Super 8 Cup after edging URA FC 3-1 on penalties in the final played at Lugogo.
Mutakubwa came off the bench in the 93rd minute to replace Tom Ikarah as the game was heading to post match shoot out to determine which side wins this year’s edition.
The Uganda Cranes goalkeeper saved penalties from Hudu Mulikyi, Nicholas Kabonge and lastly Shariph Kimbowa to inspire the Abbey Bogere Kikomeko coached side.
Only midfielder Joshua Lubwama Letti managed to score for the losing side.
Lawrence Tezikya, Jeremy Kirya and Mutakubwa himself scored for BUL FC while Ronald Otti had his penalty saved by Dennis Otim.
The title is BUL FC’s second after winning the 2022 Stanbic Uganda Cup in Masindi.
URA FC wanted to win the title in honour of their fallen coach Sam Timbe and were aiming to win their first trophy in nine years.
BUL FC won 20m as prize money while URA FC got 12m. KCCA who finished third got 10 and SC Villa got 8m for finishing fourth.
KCCA beat SC Villa 3-2 in the third place play off courtesy of a brace from Usama Arafati and a goal by Ashraf Mugume.
SC Villa scored through David Owori (penalty) and former KCCA forward Charles Lwanga.
