Uganda Cranes duo named in South Sudan squad for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers

Okocha and teammate Dhata have been influencial throughout the season

South Sudan has named striker Alfred Leku and left-back Rashid Okocha in the squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers to be played next month.

South Sudan will visit Togo on Wednesday 5th June before hosting neighbors Sudan on Tuesday June 11th.

Okocha, who features for Uganda Premier League side NEC FC, was part of the Uganda Cranes team that faced Kuwait in a friendly game in Cairo in January this year.

Despite travelling with the team, Okocha was an unused substitute as Paul Put’s locally based Cranes won 2-0 over Kuwait.

His compatriot Leku who plays for Rwanda’s Kiyovu SC, previously played for Uganda against Tanzania in a friendly match held in Dar es Salaam on 10th December 2021 under Milutin Micho Sredojevic.

Besides Leku and Okocha, there are nine more familiar faces in the South Sudan squad including Rashid Toha and Tito Okello.

Others are; Richard Anyama (Arua Hill), Atendele Geriga, Gadafi Wahab, Joseph Dhata (all from NEC FC), Ivan Wani, KCCA’s Emmanuel Loki and former Onduparaka midfielder William Gama.

The Bright Stars of South Sudan are both of Group B with one point accumulated from two games played.
