Kenyan champions Gor Mahia are set to complete the signing Ugandan midfielder Pius Chris Akena.

Akena is currently a free agent after officially leaving Greek second tier club Apollon Pontou last week.

The skillful left-footed midfielder is expected to join Gor Mahia as the club seeks to strengthen the squad ahead of the busy 2024/25 season.

Gor Mahia will take part in the upcoming CECAFA Kagame Cup, the CAF Champions League Qualifiers as well as the domestic competitions in Kenya.

Akena is a product of the Qatar Aspire Academy as well as a former player of Maroons FC in Uganda.

He has previously featured for Shabab Al Ahli and Al Rams FC both in the United Arab Emirates.

Akena played for Greek third tier side Megas Alexandros Agias Marinas before switching to the second tier club Apollon Pontou.

Akena has two caps with the Uganda Cranes earned in 2022 under coach Micho’s stewardship. He played for Uganda in friendlies against Iraq and Bahrain in January 2022.

Gor Mahia is home to Ugandan striker Patrick Henry Kaddu but it is uncertain whether he will continue with the club going into the next season.
