“I couldn’t recognise my players”. Paul Put makes brutally honest assessment of Uganda’s first half performance against South Africa

Uganda Cranes were denied of an emphatic win over South Africa with only a few seconds left to the full time when Thalante Mbatha pounced on a poorly cleared ball to strike home a 96th minute leveller.

Denis Omedi and Rogers Mato scored two spectacular second half goals that helped Paul Put’s men fight from a goal down to take the lead.

Despite the second half renaissance, Put felt that his team were a complete shadow of themselves in the first half after falling to an early Lyle Foster goal.

” I think we very lucky in the first half because we were not in the game, we were no where and were playing like children”.

Exclaimed to Belgian.

“I couldn’t recognise my players, they were giving so much respect to South Africa and were lucky that we conceded on one goal”.

He added .

Uganda returned a different entity in the second half and scored through two long range efforts from Denis Omedi and Rogers Mato.

“We had some talks in the dressing room and I told them that I need to see them play like we have done against Botswana and Algeria” .

“We got the goals and the point we got in South Africa will be important if we manage to win against Congo ”

The Cranes flew immediately after the game and will start preparation for the encounter against Congo on Monday at Mandela National Stadium.
