Mbale Heroes stunned the champions SC Villa with a performance of high-energy collective brilliance at Mbale Municipal Stadium on Sunday.
The Richard Malinga coached side marked their return to the topflight division in almost two decades with a 2-1 defeat at Express FC but were not to be denied maximum points against the champions.
Cosia Waiswa’s stunning late free kick with four minutes to normal time earned Mbale Heroes their first win of the campaign.
Waiswa’s perfect free kick beat SC Villa goalkeeper Braddy Wokorach at his near post to send the Mbale Heroes faithfuls into elation.
Villa come into the game after a 4-2 win over Mbarara City FC in their opener, they had not lost a league game since May when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to KCCA FC at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.
Defeat at Mbale Heroes put a question mark over the Jogoos’ quest to win a second league title in a row.
SC Villa’s best chance in the contest fell to Peter Onzima in the closing stages of the game but the winger failed to hit the target.
Mbale Heroes will next face Wakiso Giants on 27th September 2024 at the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, Wakiso while SC Villa host BUL FC on Wednesday.
